Whose is it?

Apostrophes that show something belongs to someone

Lesson 6 of 14
Year 4

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildOne owner? The apostrophe goes before the s. Lots of owners? It goes after.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: Polpetta's hat · Polpetta's hat is red.
  2. Tick: the chefs' hats · The chefs' hats are white.
  3. Tick: pizzas, cakes · I ate three pizzas.

4 · Help Polpetta

No apostrophe. Nothing belongs to the pizza, it is just more than one pizza, so it is wrong because a plural needs no apostrophe: Fresh pizzas for sale.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1tomato'stomatoes
2childrenschildren's
3ice cream'sice creams

Polpetta's is already right (one owner, the decoy). childrens is the irregular plural: no s on the plural, so the apostrophe goes before the s.

MediumOne owner? The apostrophe goes before the s. More than one? It goes after the s.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: the girl's bag, Nonna's spoon · Nonna's spoon is made of wood.
  2. Tick: the waiters' trays, the children's coats, the boys' boots · The waiters' trays are heavy.
  3. Tick: pizzas

4 · Help Polpetta

Nothing belongs to the pizza, so it does not need an apostrophe. It is just more than one pizza, a plural, so it should say Fresh pizzas for sale.

2 · Find the 4 mistakes

1tomato'stomatoes
2childrens'children's
3waiters apronswaiters' aprons
4menu'smenus

Polpetta's is the decoy and is right; can't is a contraction and is also right. waiters needs an apostrophe added after the s (more than one waiter).

SpicyCount the owners first. Then decide where the apostrophe goes, or whether it goes at all.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Polpetta's apron has three pockets.
  2. The chefs' knives were sharper than the waiters' pencils.
  3. Fresh tomatoes are on every table.

4 · Help Polpetta

It is still wrong because nothing belongs to the pizzas, it is just a plural, so it needs no apostrophe at all: Fresh pizzas for sale. pizzas' would be right if something belonged to more than one pizza, for example The pizzas' boxes are stacked by the door.

2 · Find the 6 mistakes

1tomato'stomatoes
2childrens'children's
3waiters apronswaiters' aprons
4head chefs new menuhead chef's new menu
5mensmen's
6flower'sflowers

Polpetta's, the Rossi family and can't are all right. children's and men's are the irregular plurals. Both tomato's and flower's are plain plurals that need no apostrophe.
