A Better Word

Swapping a tired word for one that says more

Lesson 1 of 10
Year 2

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildA near match means nearly the same. Say the new word back in the sentence.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. The pot is enormous.
  2. Polpetta is kind.
  3. The chef shouted for the salt.

4 · Help Polpetta

Those words are wrong because chilly means cold and ancient means very old. Soup should be hot and bread should be fresh, so he picked the grandest word, not the one that fits.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1ancientfresh
2chillyhot
3whispershout

enormous is the decoy (it fits). Accept new for ancient, and call or say for whisper, as long as the new word fits the sentence.

MediumA near match means nearly the same. Say the new word back in the sentence before you keep it.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: enormous, huge · The pot is enormous.
  2. Tick: delicious, tasty · The soup is delicious.
  3. Tick: whispered, murmured · Leo murmured goodnight so he would not wake the cat.

4 · Help Polpetta

Chilly means cold and ancient means very old, so nobody wants that soup or that bread. He meant hot and fresh. Say the new word back in the sentence and listen: if it sounds odd, it is the wrong word.

2 · Find the 4 mistakes

1ancientfresh
2chillyhot
3whispershout
4miniaturelarge

enormous is the decoy. Accept new for ancient, call for whisper, and big or tall for miniature.

SpicyTwo words can share a meaning and still not swap. Listen to the whole sentence.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Ac Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. The ancient castle has stood for a thousand years. My old shoes have a hole in them.
  2. Nonna is famous for her perfect pasta. Polpetta is notorious for burning the toast.
  3. I wore my old shoes. Old is better than ancient because the shoes are a few years old, not thousands.

4 · Help Polpetta

Notorious means famous for something bad, so it tells customers his pastry is terrible. He meant famous. Notorious would fit here: Polpetta is notorious for dropping plates.

2 · Find the 5 mistakes

1notoriousfamous
2tepidhot
3miniaturesmall
4elderlyold
5feebledelicate

scalding is the decoy: soup that has to cool really is scalding. Accept warm for tepid, and light for feeble.
