Big Letter, Special Word

Capital letters for the start, for names and for I

Lesson 2 of 14
Year 1

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildEvery sentence opens with a big letter. If the word is a name, it gets one too.

1 · Tick the right one

a Bb Ac Ad BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: mia, leo · Mia makes the soup.
  2. Tick: We eat pizza. · We eat pizza on Friday.
  3. Tick: I like bread., Can I help? · I like warm bread.

4 · Help Polpetta

The p must go big because it is the first word of the sentence and Polpetta is a name. Tick the first word and a name.

2 · Find the 3 missing capitals

1polpettaPolpetta
2miaMia
3fridayFriday

We eat at one. is already right (the decoy). Polpetta and Mia are both sentence openers and names; friday is an opener and a day.

MediumTwo reasons a letter goes big: it starts the sentence, or the word is a name.

1 · Tick the right one

a Bb Ac Ad BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: tom, york, monday · Mia made the soup today.
  2. Tick: Friday, Tuesday · On Monday we bake bread.
  3. Tick: Mia and I baked., I think I can. · I like hot chocolate.

4 · Help Polpetta

The i must go big because it opens the sentence and because it means me, the one writing, so it is always a capital I. The r in rome must go big because Rome is the name of a place.

SpicyTwo reasons only: it opens the sentence, or the word is a name. Everything else stays small, however important it feels.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Ac Bd BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. On Monday in June, Mia took the train to Leeds.
  2. My mum works here. Can I have a drink, Mum? Mum is a name in the second one, so it gets a big letter; my mum is just saying whose mum.

4 · Help Polpetta

Cook, The, Best, Pizza and In are wrong: they are not names and they do not open the sentence, so they stay small. Only On, Monday, I and Rome need capitals. Café needs its big C when it is part of a name: We eat at Polpetta's Café every Friday.
