Pause After the Start

When a sentence starts somewhere else, a comma marks the join

Lesson 10 of 14
Year 4

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildIf the when, where or how comes first, put a comma after it.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: Every morning · Every morning, we feed the cat.
  2. Tick: In the kitchen · In the kitchen, Polpetta stirs the soup.
  3. Tick: We wash the pans in the kitchen.

4 · Help Polpetta

The comma is wrong because The soup is who the sentence is about, not a when, where or how part. It cannot move to the end, so nothing was fronted and it takes no comma: The soup is fresh today.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1First washFirst, wash
2Every morning weEvery morning, we
3The cook, wipesThe cook wipes

After lunch, we clean the tables is the decoy (already right).

MediumCould that opening part move to the end? Then it is fronted, and it takes a comma.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: After school, Later that day · After school, I help in the café.
  2. Tick: Under the counter, With a smile · With a smile, Mia handed out the menus.
  3. Tick: We keep the spare menus under the counter., The spare menus are kept under the counter.

4 · Help Polpetta

The soup is the subject, who the sentence is about, not a when, where or how part. Try moving it to the end: is fresh today the soup is nonsense, so nothing was fronted and the comma has to go.

2 · Find the 4 mistakes

1First washFirst, wash
2Every Friday weEvery Friday, we
3Before you leave checkBefore you leave, check
4The washing-up, isThe washing-up is

After lunch, wipe every table is the decoy.

SpicyMove it to the end. If it goes, it was fronted, and the comma was earning its keep.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Before the rush, we laid the tables. We laid the tables before the rush.
  2. Outside the café, a queue formed before nine o'clock.
  3. Polpetta dropped the tray. Polpetta is who the sentence is about and will not move to the end, so no comma.

4 · Help Polpetta

The comma marks the join after a fronted part. At seven is at the end now, so there is no join to mark and the comma does nothing: The café opens at seven. Put it at the front and it needs one: At seven, the café opens.

2 · Find the 6 mistakes

1First washFirst, wash
2Every Friday weEvery Friday, we
3Before you leave checkBefore you leave, check
4The washing-up, isThe washing-up is
5the floor, at the endthe floor at the end
6has gone lockhas gone, lock

After lunch, wipe every table is the decoy. The commas round who never shouts are a different job and stay.
