Might, Should, Must

Modal verbs that set how likely, or how necessary, something is

Lesson 11 of 14
Year 5

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildMight means perhaps. Should means good idea. Must means no choice. After all of them: have, never of.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Ac Ad BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. It might rain tomorrow.
  2. You should try the soup.
  3. You must wash your hands.

4 · Help Polpetta

It is wrong because after a modal verb like must you write have, never of: I must have left the oven on. Of only sounds like have.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1should ofshould have
2might ofmight have
3could ofcould have

must have dreamt it is already right (the decoy).

MediumSet the dial: might and could leave a doubt, should advises, must and will leave none. And after a modal it is always have.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Ad AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: might · It might be busy tomorrow.
  2. Tick: You should book a table., You ought to try the soup. · You ought to book a table before Friday.
  3. Tick: must · Everyone must tie back long hair.

4 · Help Polpetta

You can only use one modal verb before a verb. Might and could both mean perhaps, so putting them together does not make it more likely, it just breaks the sentence: We might win the baking prize.

2 · Find the 5 mistakes

1might of startedmight have started
2could of arrivedcould have arrived
3should of polishedshould have polished
4might could needmight need
5will must wantwill want

must of course clean it up is correct: of belongs to of course, not to must. For might could and will must accept either single modal (might need or could need; will want or must want).

SpicyOne modal per verb. Choose its strength on purpose, then have, never of, if you need the past.

1 · Tick the right one

a Bb Ac Bd BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. The sauce might boil over. The sauce must not boil over.
  2. It might perhaps rain this afternoon.
  3. The mayor could have visited while we were closed.

4 · Help Polpetta

Two modals cannot sit before one verb, so might could is wrong; choose one, might. After a modal you write have, never of, so must of moved is wrong too. It might rain, so we should move the picnic inside.

2 · Find the 6 mistakes

1will of finishedwill have finished
2should of goneshould have gone
3might could seatmight seat
4may of noticedmay have noticed
5might will bringmight bring
6could of soldcould have sold

must of course cut the ribbon is the honest of and stays. For the double modals accept either single modal (might seat or could seat; might bring or will bring).
