It Belongs to Someone

An apostrophe can show who something belongs to

Lesson 5 of 14
Year 2

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildWho owns it? Then the apostrophe goes before the s.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: Marco's apron · Marco's apron is white.
  2. Tick: the dog's bowl · The dog's bowl is empty.
  3. Tick: cakes, apples · I can see three cakes.

4 · Help Polpetta

It is wrong because the lemons and buns do not own anything. Six and ten just mean more than one, so there is no apostrophe: six lemons and ten buns.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1NonnasNonna's
2muffin'smuffins
3chefs hatchef's hat

'waiters' is the decoy, a plain plural with no apostrophe.

MediumOne owner? The apostrophe goes before the s. Only more than one? No apostrophe at all.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: Nonna's soup, Marco's hat · Nonna's soup is the best in Rome.
  2. Tick: the cat's tail, the café's door, the tree's leaves · The café's door is painted red.
  3. Tick: We sold ten pizzas today., The plates are clean.

4 · Help Polpetta

Ask who owns it. Nobody does: six lemons and ten buns are just more than one, so they need no apostrophe at all. The owning apostrophe is only for an owner, like Nonna's spoon.

2 · Find the 4 mistakes

1NonnasNonna's
2muffin'smuffins
3cake'scakes
4chefs hatchef's hat

'waiters' is the decoy, a plain plural with no apostrophe.

SpicyFind the owner first. One owner takes 's, even when the name already ends in s.

1 · Tick the right one

a Bb Ac Bd BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. James's bike is red.
  2. Nonna's kitchen has six big pans in it.
  3. We need two lemons for the cake.

4 · Help Polpetta

Muffin's is wrong because the muffins do not own anything, it is just more than one, so it is muffins with no apostrophe. Jame's is wrong because the owner is James, and the whole name comes first, then 's: James's buns. Muffin's would be right if one muffin owned something, like the muffin's paper case.

2 · Find the 6 mistakes

1NonnasNonna's
2muffin'smuffins
3cake'scakes
4JamessJames's
5chefs hatchef's hat
6MarcosMarco's

'the boss's notice' is the decoy phrase and is already right; 'waiters' and 'pizzas' are plain plurals and also right. Accept James' as well as James's.
