An s at the end can mean two very different things
Lesson 12 of 17 Year 4
Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.
MildAsk what the s is doing. More than one? Then leave it alone.
1 · Tick the right one
a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option
3 · Now you write
Model answers
Tick: cats · I can see three cats on the wall.
Tick: the chef's hat · The chef's hat is white.
Tick: Sundays
4 · Help Polpetta
It is wrong because nothing belongs to Sunday or Monday. The s only means more than one day, so a plural gets no apostrophe: We are open Sundays and Mondays.
2 · Find the 3 mistakes
1
roll's
rolls
2
juice's
juices
3
Sunday's
Sundays
Polpetta's is the decoy and is right (the café belongs to Polpetta). All three mistakes are plain plurals that need no apostrophe.
MediumMore than one, or belongs to? Only one of those takes an apostrophe.
1 · Tick the right one
a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option
3 · Now you write
Model answers
Tick: The waiters carry plates., We ate six buns., The cups are clean. · The waiters carry six plates each.
Tick: Nonna's · Leo's bike is by the door.
Tick: Open Sundays, Fresh rolls daily · Hot soups and cold drinks every day
4 · Help Polpetta
Nothing belongs to Sunday or Monday, the s just means more than one, so there should be no apostrophe at all: We are open Sundays and Mondays. Ask what the s is doing first.
2 · Find the 4 mistakes
1
roll's
rolls
2
juice's
juices
3
Sunday's
Sundays
4
chef's are
chefs are
Polpetta's is the decoy and is right. chef's is a plural (more than one chef is in from six), so it loses its apostrophe.
SpicyAsk what the s is doing before you write. Most of them are innocent.
1 · Tick the right one
a Ab Ac Bd AA = left option, B = right option
3 · Now you write
Model answers
The chef's knives are next to the plates.
The babies are asleep upstairs.
The chefs laugh. With an apostrophe it becomes the chef's laugh: one chef's laugh, not lots of chefs laughing.
4 · Help Polpetta
It is still wrong because nothing belongs to Sunday or Monday at all, the s only means more than one day, so no apostrophe goes anywhere: We are open Sundays and Mondays. Sunday's would be right when something belongs to Sunday, for example Sunday's special is lasagne.
2 · Find the 6 mistakes
1
roll's
rolls
2
juice's
juices
3
Sunday's
Sundays
4
chef's are
chefs are
5
waiters trays
waiters' trays
6
ladie's
ladies
Polpetta's is the decoy and is right. waiters trays is the missing mark (the trays belong to more than one waiter, so the apostrophe goes after the s). ladie's is a plain plural that changed its spelling; it needs no apostrophe. tomatoes is right.
