Read It Like You Mean It

Reading out loud so people want to listen

Lesson 1 of 4
Year 1

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildSay the words in groups. Let your voice show how it feels.

1 · Tick the better reading

a Ab Bc Bd BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Mark it and read it

Model answers
  1. I will breathe after today (at the full stop).
  2. The loudest word is busy.
  3. This one sounds happy, so read it warm and all in one go.

4 · Help Polpetta

Nonna could not tell how the story felt, because every word sat on its own like a robot. Read the words in groups and let your voice show the feeling.

2 · Mend the 3 marks

The full stop after busy today is the decoy. Three marks: a question mark, a missing full stop after buns, a missing full stop at the end.

MediumRead it in groups of words. Your voice tells us how it feels.

1 · Tick the better reading

a Ab Bc Bd BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Mark it and read it

Model answers
  1. Put a breath line after each group of two or three words, one scoop per breath.
  2. Underline the word that carries the feeling, then say it a little louder than the rest.
  3. Write the feeling (happy, calm, excited) at the top and read it so a listener could guess it.

4 · Help Polpetta

Every word was on its own, so no groups of words formed and there was no feeling in his voice. Nonna could not hear where one idea ended and the next began. Read in groups, like talking, and let your voice show the feeling.

2 · Mend the 4 marks

4Please do not be latePlease do not be late.

The full stop after all morning is the decoy.

SpicyThe feeling can change halfway through. Your voice has to change with it.

1 · Tick the better reading

a Ab Ac Ad BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Mark it and read it

Model answers
  1. Mark a breath after each group of words, then draw a line where the feeling turns (for example from calm to excited).
  2. Underline the word that carries the feeling and say why: it is the word the sentence is really about.
  3. Read it calm, then excited, then say which one fits: the marks and the words tell you which.

4 · Help Polpetta

If every sentence is loud and excited, the voice never changes, so the listener cannot tell which bit matters. Match the voice to each sentence, calm for the calm ones. One that really does want a big voice: What a big pizza!

2 · Mend the 5 marks

5Please do not be latePlease do not be late.

The full stop after the window is the decoy. What a lot of people came today is the sentence that is neither asking nor telling; it wants an exclamation mark.
