Squash Two Words

An apostrophe stands where the letters used to be

Lesson 4 of 14
Year 2

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildSay the two long words. Cross out the letter that leaves. The mark sits in its seat.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Ad AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. I don't like cold soup.
  2. I'll help you carry the tray.
  3. We're going to the café.

4 · Help Polpetta

The letter that left is the o from are not. The mark belongs there because the apostrophe sits in the hole where the o was, not at the join: aren't.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1Do'ntDon't
2is'ntisn't
3IllI'll

We're is the short word that is already right (the decoy). Ill is a real word doing the wrong job, so it hides.

MediumWrite both words. Cross out the letters that leave. The apostrophe takes their place, not the gap between the words.

1 · Tick the right one

a Bb Ac Ad BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: don't, can't · I don't like spicy soup.
  2. Tick: I'll · I'll wash the cups after lunch.
  3. Tick: haven't, we're, they'll · We haven't got any cake left.

4 · Help Polpetta

Write are not, cross out the o, and drop the apostrophe into the hole: aren't. The mark goes where the letter left, not where the two words join.

2 · Find the 4 mistakes

1Do'ntDon't
2theresthere's
3is'ntisn't
4hasnthasn't

We're is the decoy.

SpicyWrite the long form first. Some short words change their spelling as well, so the hole is not always where you expect it.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. I won't be late. Won't comes from an old way of saying will not (wol not), so it does not look like will.
  2. We open at eight o'clock and we're busy by nine.
  3. We shan't be baking on Sunday. The letters l, l and o left from shall not.

4 · Help Polpetta

Won't comes from will not. The apostrophe goes where the o of not left, in front of the t, not at the join, so it is won't. O'clock looks like a join but it is short for of the clock; the mark stands for the letters that left, f, t, h and e.

2 · Find the 6 mistakes

1Wo'ntWon't
2shantshan't
3are'ntaren't
4hasnthasn't
5wontwon't
6WellWe'll

o'clock is the decoy. wont and Well are the two real words doing the wrong job.
