The Letters You Can't Hear

Letters that stay in the word and stay silent

Lesson 17 of 17
Year 6

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildSome letters are written but never said. Look for them before you write.

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. I can knock on the door. The silent letter is k.
  2. There is a lamb in the field. The silent letter is b.
  3. My word is island. The silent letter is s.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1NockKnock
2ilandisland
3crumcrumb

MediumCannot hear the letter? Find a relative of the word that says it out loud.

1 · Tick the right spelling

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: sign → signature, bomb → bombard
  2. Tick: knight, listen, castle · The knight rode over the bridge.
  3. Tick: lamb, comb, autumn

4 · Help Polpetta

Crumb keeps a b that nobody says, so writing only what he heard dropped a letter. The relative crumble says the b out loud, so the sign should say Not a crumb left on the plate.

2 · Find the 5 mistakes

1NockKnock
2ilandisland
3crumcrumb
4soffensoften
5rongwrong

1 · Tick the right spelling

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Please sign here, and then put your signature on the second line as well.
  2. knight has a silent k and lamb has a silent b.
  3. island has no relative that says the s. I remember it as an island IS LAND with water all round it.

4 · Help Polpetta

Crumb is mended, but edable is still wrong: the word is edible, and it ends in -ible, not -able. A word that really does end in -able is noticeable, which keeps its silent e so the c stays soft.

2 · Find the 7 mistakes

1NockKnock
2ilandisland
3crumcrumb
4soffensoften
5rongwrong
6autumautumn
7siencescience
