Sound It, Write It

Listening to a word, then writing every sound

Lesson 1 of 17
Year 1

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildSay the word out loud. Count the sounds. Write one letter for each.

1 · Tick the right spelling

a Bb Bc Ad AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. I can spell cat.
  2. My word is fish.
  3. I have learnt the word said.

4 · Help Polpetta

It is wrong because the last sound in fish is sh, and sh is one sound that needs two letters, s and h: Fresh fish and hot chips.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1fisfish
2sedsaid
3cakcake

buzz is the odd-looking word that is already right. said is a tricky word, not a sounding-out word.

MediumSay the word. Count the sounds. Write one letter, or one letter pair, for each.

1 · Tick the right spelling

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: cat, fish, pot
  2. Tick: chip, shop
  3. Tick: was, said · Mia said it was time for tea.

4 · Help Polpetta

Fish has three sounds, f, i and sh, but the sh sound needs two letters. One letter for every sound is not enough when a sound is a letter pair: fish, not fis.

2 · Find the 4 mistakes

1fisfish
2sedsaid
3cakcake
4thaythey

buzz is already right. sed and thay are tricky words that cannot be sounded out; cak has lost its magic e.

SpicyCount the sounds first. Then decide how many letters each sound needs.

1 · Tick the right spelling

a Ab Ac Bd BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. My word is milk. It has four sounds and four letters.
  2. The chips are hot. ch is one sound made of two letters.
  3. I said the fish was fresh.

4 · Help Polpetta

sh is one sound wearing two letters, s and h, so it needs two letters, not three. fissh has an extra s: fresh fish. Another word that ends in sh is dish (or wish).

2 · Find the 6 mistakes

1sedsaid
2caekcake
3mikmilk
4woswas
5disdish
6thaythey

buzz is already right. caek is the single letter in the wrong place. mik has lost the quiet l in the cluster. sed, wos and thay are tricky words.
