Tricky Endings

Endings that sound the same and are spelled differently

Lesson 16 of 17
Year 5

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildSay the root word first. It often tells you which ending to use.

1 · Tick the right spelling

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Polpetta is important to the café.
  2. Today's special is tomato soup.
  3. The chairs are comfortable.

4 · Help Polpetta

It is wrong because the root word tells you the ending. Say observation out loud and you hear an a, so the word is observant with -ant.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1speshalspecial
2importentimportant
3comfortiblecomfortable

delicious is the decoy and is right. comfort is a complete word, so it takes -able.

MediumTwo clues: the root word, and the letter just before the ending.

1 · Tick the right spelling

a Bb Ac Ad BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: important, hesitant, different · hesitant, from the root word hesitate.
  2. Tick: special, official, partial · official, the letter before the ending is i, a vowel, so -cial.
  3. Tick: comfortable, possible, visible · The sofa by the window is very comfortable.

4 · Help Polpetta

Both endings sound the same, so his ears cannot choose. The root word can: say observation and you hear an a, so it must be observant, not observent.

2 · Find the 5 mistakes

1speshalspecial
2patiantpatient
3importentimportant
4comfortiblecomfortable
5availibleavailable

delicious is the decoy and is right. patiant should end in -ent: patience has an e, so patient does too.

SpicyUse the clues. When they run out, say so, then learn the word.

1 · Tick the right spelling

a Ab Ac Bd BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Our patient waiter is also very tolerant.
  2. special, the letter before is i (a vowel). essential, the letter before is n (a consonant).
  3. financial: the letter-before clue says -tial but the real word is -cial. I would learn it with look, cover, write, check.

4 · Help Polpetta

It is still wrong because the root word clue is about hearing the vowel in observation, not copying every letter of observe. The e drops before -ant, so it is observant. A word where -ent is right is confident, because you hear the e in confidence.

2 · Find the 7 mistakes

1speshalspecial
2patiantpatient
3importentimportant
4hesitenthesitant
5comfortiblecomfortable
6finantialfinancial
7availibleavailable

delicious is the decoy and is right. finantial is the one that obeys the letter-before clue (n is a consonant) and is still wrong; it has to be learned.
