When, Where, Why

Words that tell you the time, the place or the reason

Lesson 7 of 14
Year 3

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

Mildbecause needs a reason. If nothing is asking why, choose a different word.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Ac Bd BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. We eat pudding after we finish dinner.
  2. I put my coat on because it was cold.
  3. The café was shut because of the snow.

4 · Help Polpetta

He needs because, not because of, because a whole part follows (the soup was cold). He should have written: Because the soup was cold, I heated it up. Because of only goes before a thing.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1because you open the ovenbefore you open the oven
2because of the kitchen is hotbecause the kitchen is hot
3because you stir the potwhile you stir the pot

after you cook is the word already right. Nobody is asking why in the first and last rules, so because has no work: accept before or when for the first, and while, as or when for the last.

MediumLook at what comes next. A whole part needs because. A thing needs because of.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Ac Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: after · We lock the door when the last customer leaves.
  2. Tick: because · We closed early because it was snowing.
  3. Tick: because of · We closed early because of the snow.

4 · Help Polpetta

Look at what comes next. If a whole part follows, with its own verb, he needs because: because the soup was cold. If just a thing follows, he needs because of: because of the cold soup. His sign has a whole part after because of, so it is wrong.

2 · Find the 4 mistakes

1because you open the ovenbefore you open the oven
2because of the kitchen gets hotbecause the kitchen gets hot
3because you stir the soupwhile you stir the soup
4Because of the floor is wetBecause the floor is wet

after you use them is the word already right. Accept when for the first fix and as or when for the third.

SpicyOne idea, three kinds of word. Check what follows before you choose which.

1 · Tick the right one

a Bb Ac Ad BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. We closed early because the oven broke. We closed early because of the broken oven.
  2. We eat lunch (when) after the rush, (where) in the little garden behind the café.
  3. The oven was too hot. Therefore, we opened the window.

4 · Help Polpetta

Because of takes a thing, but it was cold is a whole part with its own verb, so it needs because: I heated the soup because it was cold. Because of is right before a thing: The café closed because of the storm.

2 · Find the 6 mistakes

1because you open the ovenbefore you open the oven
2because of the kitchen gets hotbecause the kitchen gets hot
3because you stir the soupwhile you stir the soup
4Because of the floor is wetBecause the floor is wet
5therefore wait ten minutesso wait ten minutes
6during you cook itwhile you cook it

after you use them is the word already right. therefore is an adverb, not a joining word, so it cannot join two parts after a comma; accept so, or a new sentence: Therefore, wait ten minutes. during is a preposition and takes a thing, so during you cook it needs while (or as). For the tune, accept as or when as well as while.
