The Extra Bit

Brackets, dashes and commas around the bit you could lift out

Lesson 12 of 16
Year 5

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildThe extra bit needs a mark at both ends. Lift it out. The sentence must still stand.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Ad AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: our best chef · Polpetta, our best chef, made the soup.
  2. Tick: open since May · The café (open since May) is always busy.
  3. Tick: Polpetta made the soup.

4 · Help Polpetta

The comma after soup opens the extra bit but nothing closes it. The marks come in pairs, so it needs a second comma after daily: Our soup, made fresh daily, is the best in Rome.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1Our chef, the famous Polpetta makes every dish himself. Our chef, the famous Polpetta, makes every dish himself.
2Our waitress, a local girl carries four plates at once. Our waitress, a local girl, carries four plates at once.
3The soup thick and green, is today's special. The soup, thick and green, is today's special.

The bread, baked at dawn, is still warm at nine is the perfect pair (the decoy).

MediumOpen the pair, close the pair. Then lift the extra bit out and check the sentence still stands.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Ad AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. Tick: tired after service, who loves chocolate · Nonna, who is eighty, still bakes every day.
  2. Tick: The bill (all forty pounds) was paid by Leo., Nonna (who is eighty) still bakes. · The café (open since May) is always full.
  3. Tick: The kitchen – hot as an oven – emptied fast., Mia – my sister – runs the till.

4 · Help Polpetta

The second comma is missing. The extra bit is made fresh daily, so the closing comma goes straight after daily, before is: Our soup, made fresh daily, is the best in Rome. Lift the middle out and Our soup is the best in Rome still stands.

2 · Find the 4 mistakes

1Our chef, the famous Polpetta makes every dish himself. Our chef, the famous Polpetta, makes every dish himself.
2The menu (three courses costs twelve pounds. The menu (three courses) costs twelve pounds.
3The bread, baked at dawn is still warm at nine o'clock. The bread, baked at dawn, is still warm at nine o'clock.
4The soup thick and green, is today's special. The soup, thick and green, is today's special.

Our café (open since May) is already famous across Rome is the perfect pair (the decoy).

SpicyOpen it, close it, match it. Two marks, the same kind, and a sentence that stands without the middle.

1 · Tick the right one

a Bb Ac Bd BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. The café (tiny but famous) was packed. The café – tiny but famous – was packed. I would print the brackets, because the aside is a quiet one.
  2. Polpetta, made the soup, on Friday. Lift out made the soup and only Polpetta on Friday is left, which is not a sentence, so the verb was never an extra bit.
  3. The soup (made this morning, before the market opened, by Nonna) was still hot.

4 · Help Polpetta

The marks still fail because they do not match: a comma opens the extra bit and a bracket closes it. The two marks must be the same kind. Commas: Our soup, made fresh daily, is the best in Rome. Brackets: Our soup (made fresh daily) is the best in Rome.

2 · Find the 6 mistakes

1Our chef, the famous Polpetta makes every dish himself,Our chef, the famous Polpetta, makes every dish himself,
2our waitress a local girl, carries four plates at once.our waitress, a local girl, carries four plates at once.
3The menu (three courses costs twelve pounds,The menu (three courses) costs twelve pounds,
4Our tiramisu, which sells out by noon is worth the queue,Our tiramisu, which sells out by noon, is worth the queue,
5the gelato – made with market lemons, never lasts the afternoon.the gelato, made with market lemons, never lasts the afternoon.
6The soup thick and green, is today's special. The soup, thick and green, is today's special.

Two pairs are already right: the bread, baked at dawn, and Our café (open since May). For the gelato accept a matching pair of dashes as well as commas; the fault is the mismatch.
