Grown-Up Endings

Endings that turn a word into a longer, more formal one

Lesson 10 of 17
Year 3

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildFind the small word hiding inside the long one. Spell that first.

1 · Tick the right one

a Ab Bc Bd AA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

  2. The hot oven is dangerous.
  3. We need more information.

4 · Help Polpetta

It is wrong because happy ends in a consonant and then y, so the y swaps for an i before -ly. Happy becomes happi, then add ly: happily.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1happylyhappily
2dangerusdangerous
3informasioninformation

famous is the intended decoy; quickly is also correct.

  2. Tick: famous, dangerous · The hot pans are dangerous.
  3. Tick: information, preparation · The preparation for the party took all day.

4 · Help Polpetta

A root ending in a consonant and then y does not keep the y. Swap the y for an i first, then add -ly: happily.

2 · Find the 5 mistakes

1happylyhappily
2preperationpreparation
3gentleygently
4dangerusdangerous
5informasioninformation

SpicyEvery long word here was once a short one. Say what it was before you correct it.

1 · Tick the right one

a Bb Ac Ad BA = left option, B = right option

3 · Now you write

Model answers
  1. We prepare the dough at five, and the preparation takes an hour.
  2. Polpetta happily cooks all morning.
  3. Polpetta's jokes are humorous, even though humour keeps its u on its own.

4 · Help Polpetta

The y has to change into an i, not have an i added after it. Happy loses its y, then takes i and ly: happily, not happyily. The y stays when it comes after a vowel, so playfully and joyfully keep it.

2 · Find the 7 mistakes

1happylyhappily
2preperationpreparation
3gentleygently
4dangerusdangerous
5informasioninformation
6basiclybasically
7publicallypublicly
