Who Said That?

Speech marks go around the words that come out of a mouth

Lesson 7 of 14
Year 3

Task 1 gives the letter of the right option as printed on the sheet. Task 2 lists the mistakes in the order they appear, with the correction. Task 3 and 4 answers are models, not the only acceptable wording: any answer that uses the rule the lesson taught should be credited.

MildMarks go around the words that came out of a mouth. Nothing else goes inside.

  2. Tick: Coming right up. · The chef said, "Coming right up."
  3. Tick: Is it ready? · Ben asked, "Is it ready?"

4 · Help Polpetta

Nonna never said the words called Nonna, so they must stay outside the marks. The marks shut when her mouth shuts: "Dinner is ready," called Nonna.

2 · Find the 3 mistakes

1Marco said, The soup is ready.Marco said, "The soup is ready."
2"who wants pasta?""Who wants pasta?"
3"It is too hot! laughed Ben.""It is too hot!" laughed Ben.

The waiter said, "Enjoy your meal." is the line already right.

4 · Help Polpetta

The marks have swallowed the whole sentence. Nonna only said Dinner is ready; she did not say called Nonna, so the speaker's name stays outside: "Dinner is ready," called Nonna.

Nobody's mouth said the words the dinner was ready; that is Polpetta telling us what Nonna said, so no marks belong. As real speech it is: Nonna said, "The dinner is ready."
